Matthew Bend

BSMS Manager

I joined NHSBT in January 2019, following over 20 years as a Biomedical Scientist working in Haematology and Transfusion Laboratories around the UK, with over a decade working exclusively in Transfusion and most recently as Transfusion Laboratory Manager.

My current role is as BSMS Manager. I have overall responsibility and management of the BSMS team and scheme strategic direction. The aim is to continue to progress the work of the BSMS in raising the profile of inventory management best practice, highlighting examples of good practice and working with hospitals to optimise the supply chain ensuring optimisation of supply.

My personal aim is to ensure that BSMS continues to offer valuable stock management insights and provide data to both the UK blood services and Hospitals to influence appropriate use of blood components.

Jill Caulfield

BSMS Lead Specialist

I joined the BSMS team, taking up a role of Lead Specialist, from April 2021. I qualified as a Biomedical Scientist in 2000, working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, later becoming Transfusion senior and then Technical Manager to 3 NHS hospital laboratories in the North East of England. I completed the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Transfusion Science in 2013, winning the R.J Lavington prize and was invited onto the IBMS Transfusion Specialist Advisory Panel, where I now act as Chief Examiner for this qualification.

I am hoping to bring both my experience and knowledge of hospital blood stocks to this scheme, along with my enthusiasm for Transfusion, to become part of this evolving team, who have been doing an incredible job highlighting the importance of this precious lifegiving product.

Sophie Staples

BSMS Lead Specialist

I qualified as a Biomedical Scientist and have worked in several UK hospital Haematology and Transfusion laboratories before completing the Clinical Scientist qualification with an MSc in Haematology and Transfusion. Prior to joining the BSMS team in April 2020, I was the Development Lead for the Blood Safety and Conservation Team at Oxford University Hospitals and have published several papers about the benefits of electronic transfusion systems.

I bring to the team my experience of working closely with the blood bank, clinical teams and the blood supply chain using a wide variety of data as evidence to optimise blood management. I think it is important for the BSMS to evolve to meet the needs of our users to provide evidence for improving blood management practices and to share this success with others.

Mitchell Cooke

Data Analyst

I joined the BSMS team in May 2023, filling the role of Data Analyst. Having previously worked within an acute NHS trust as an Analyst, I understand the challenges healthcare systems face in ensuring accurate and consistent monitoring of data but also the benefit these can have on the reliability and usability of analysis to drive improvement.

I studied at Southampton University and hold a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Public Health and more recently was a member of the 2022 Health Service Modelling Associates Programme hosted by the University of Exeter which facilitated teaching on Operational Research and Data Science techniques for use within healthcare.

I hope to apply my learning from this programme and my previous experience in NHS data management to develop the analytical processes used by BSMS to build on the successes of the scheme.
